Developing A Millennial Workforce In Los Angeles

Career Climbers / 10th July 2017

Last month, Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Bixel Exchange partnered to expand tech training and career exploration opportunities for L.A. youth. The partnership aims to address workforce demands in the rapidly growing tech region known as Silicon Beach through The L.A.Tech Talent Pipeline. The program will place 100 students in internships beginning this summer.

The Michelson 20MM Foundation proudly joins industry partners, including Snap, Inc., Boingo Wireless, and MiTu, to provide internships that will increase hands-on experience and training for low-income students in the tech sector.

In the past 12 years, summer youth employment has declined 40% across the United States. Without support from organized programs like HIRE LA’s Youth and its L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline, resources for job training and placement support aimed at young adults, ages 18-24, are increasingly scarce.

“We have an opportunity to lead by example,” explained Dr. Gary K. Michelson, founder of the Michelson 20MM Foundation. “Internships form a crucial component of early career development, we need programs like this to help usher in the next generation of educated talent.”

Michelson 20MM invests in leading edge entrepreneurs, technologies, models, and initiatives with the potential to improve access, affordability, and student success in higher education. By providing internships, the organization continues to bridge the gap between higher education and the next generation workforce.

Mayor Garcetti has set a goal of hiring 20,000 young people in Los Angeles by 2020. Meeting this goal will require a growing network of partners committed to expanding talent development opportunities.
